In Order. Prayer For Mercy

May 28, 2017. Psalm 111-118.

Psalm 116.1-2

1 I love the Lord because he hears my voice and my prayer for mercy.

2 Because he bends down to listen, I will pray as long as I have breath!

I am going to share with you a truth that will change your life forever and still makes me stand in awe each time I hear it spoken or experience it’s truth. “God answers prayer.” A simple statement with a profound, powerful truth. The God of all creation who is everywhere at all times, hears all things, holds all things together with the power of His might, the moment he hears me pray He not only hears me but begins to answer my prayer.

I believe the Psalmist tells us in these verses God’s favorite prayer to answer. The prayer for mercy. In fact Jesus basically endorses the mercy prayer when he compared the prayers of the Pharisee and the Tax Collector.

Luke 18.13-14

13 “But the tax collector stood at a distance and dared not even lift his eyes to heaven as he prayed. Instead, he beat his chest in sorrow, saying, ‘O God, be merciful to me, for I am a sinner.’ 14 I tell you, this sinner, not the Pharisee, returned home justified before God. For those who exalt themselves will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be exalted.”

The prayer for mercy from God should be part of our daily spiritual routine in caring for our soul. The prayer humbles us before God, admits our condition, covers just about every situation we will face or have faced.

There are benefits of the answered prayer for mercy.

Psalm 118.5-9

5 In my distress I prayed to the Lord, and the Lord answered me and set me free.

Set free from the anxiety that plagues us when we know we are in over our heads, have needs that only God can meet or in bondage to sin that brings us shame and guilt. What ever is holding you back form Him remember He is the God that sets the captives free.

6 The Lord is for me, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?

Confidence in the face of fear, what ever the source of our fears. Deliverance from the fear of man and the threats of our enemies.

7 Yes, the Lord is for me; he will help me.I will look in triumph at those who hate me.

Victory over the haters. Those that would love to see you fail, take delight in telling you and others how awful you are and do everything they can to make your life miserable.

8 It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in people.

9 It is better to take refuge in the Lord than to trust in princes.

God’s mercy, unlike people can always be trusted. It never fails it is always there to shelter our souls and bring us deliverance.

Hebrews 4:16

16 So let us come boldly to the throne of our gracious God. There we will receive his mercy, and we will find grace to help us when we need it most.

“Heavenly Father be merciful to me for I am a sinner. Grant to me this day your mercy and grace to face any trouble, temptation or enemy that threatens my soul. I humble myself before you and recognize my absolute dependence on you. Grant me confidence in you that is demonstrated in a triumphant spirit and a fearless, humble heart.”
